The California newt has warty, slate-gray skin on its back and bright orange-yellow skin underneath. It is very similar in appearance to the rough-skinned newt and it is often impossible to tell them apart without dissection, but in general, the California newt has orange skin around the bottom of its eye while the rough-skinned newt has gray skin around the bottom of its eye.

The California newt also has eyes that protrude past the jawline when viewed from above, while the rough-skinned newt’s eyes do not protrude, giving it’s head a bullet-like appearance.

It is normal for your newt to feel a little nervous after receiving it, but this is only temporary, and the newt will begin to explore its new environment in minimal time.
Be sure to turn off the lights in the terrarium for at least the first 24 hours to allow the animal to adjust to its new environment after being kept in a dark cage, and make sure that the aquarium filter flow is not too intense for aquatic newts.
